Greatest single tornado disaster in U.S. history with
695 people killed and 2037 injured in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.
The above picture shows the largest hailstone on record in the U.S.
It fell on June 22, 2003 in Aurora, Nebraska and was 7.0 inches in diameter
and 18.75 inches in circumference.
Huge Hail In Illinois
During the afternoon of May 25, 1839, New Greenfield, Illinois and the surrounding area were hit by a hailstorm with hailstones rivaling the current record for both size and weight. Six of these extraordinary hailstones weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces, which means that they averaged 1.2 pounds apiece, and most of these stones were said to be at least twice the size of goose eggs. One hailstone measured 17 inches in circumference – the current record hailstone (see above photo) is 18.75 inches in circumference. Various animals, including sheep and pigs, were killed by the hail, and one woman was injured.
